On Sexual Abuse & Sexual Violence Awareness Week 2023, Larne Football Club has teamed up with White Ribbon NI to deliver the charity’s first Listen, Learn, Lead Youth Workshop, attended by the student athletes enrolled in our Scholarship Programme.

During the pilot workshop, White Ribbon staff engaged with both first and second year student athletes to provide information aimed at empowering and encouraging young people to speak out about violence against women and girls.

Our student athletes were challenged to discuss the different forms of violence against women and girls, bystander intervention, societal attitudes, PSNI legislation, healthy relationships and other important topics during the workshop, which will be made available to schools, youth organisations and other football clubs over the coming weeks and months.

White Ribbon NI’s introduction to our student athletes marks the latest action in a long-term relationship with the club, which began with the Inver Reds becoming the first football club in Northern Ireland to sign the White Ribbon Charter back in 2018.

Tahnee McCorry, the Larne-based CEO of White Ribbon NI said:

“Since the launch of White Ribbon in NI in November 2021, a lot of hard work has been carried out and our original goal remains resolute – to end violence against women and girls.

“Through our new Listen, Learn, Lead Youth Workshops, we will be in a position to speak with young people directly to better understand their views on these topics, alongside educating them on a range of important issues which will go further to help us achieve our end goal.

“I personally want to wholeheartedly thank Larne FC for the trailblazing work they have carried out over the last few years to take a stand against violence against women. As a club, they have taken steps to not only educate, but to inspire a whole new generation of young people to challenge the attitudes and beliefs which perpetuate violence against women and girls in Northern Ireland.”

White Ribbon NI’s Listen, Learn, Lead Youth Workshops are delivered in partnership with the Assets Recovery Community Scheme managed by the Department of Justice.
