Through our membership at the European Football Clubs (EFC) and in partnership with UEFA, we are delighted to announce that we are participating in the Get Trained, Save Lives programme.
The aim of the programme is to work together within the world of football to equip as many people as possible with life-saving skills.
Millions of people enjoy football in Europe – whether training at their local club, competing in matches or cheering on their favorite team in a stadium. Their hearts beat for football. But what if a heart suddenly stops?
Every day, many people die from sudden cardiac arrest in Europe. It can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere. Getting medical assistance and starting CPR immediately is crucial; every second counts. Sudden cardiac arrest is the third leading cause of death in Europe, happening to 1 in 1000 people every year. Every minute that passes decreases the chances of survival by 10%.
As part of our commitment to the programme, we will be providing valuable resources to our players, staff and supporters, including:
- Access to a free online CPR course
- A CPR workshop for our first-team squad
- Additional CRP workshops for suppporters
- General facts and information to raise awareness
Speaking on the club’s participation in the Get Trained, Save Lives programme, Assistant Manager Mick O’Boyle said:
“The get trained save lives programme is a fantastic initiative.
“CPR is one of those skills that you hope you never have to use but in the unfortunate case where you find someone needing help you want to have the confidence and knowledge to be able to help.
“The importance is in the title, learning these skills could save a life and I think the work from UEFA and the EFC to promote the learning of CPR is excellent.
“With over 200 sudden cardiac arrests each day in the UK we want our players and staff feel comfortable that they can help someone in that situation. Providing CPR can double someone’s chances of survival when applied promptly and effectively so I think anyone who has the opportunity to learn should take the time.
“We want to train as many people in the club and around the town as possible.”
Please keep an eye on the club’s social media channels for the release of these resources in due course.
