Larne FC Women will kick off their BOYLE Sports Women’s Cup campaign tonight against Lisburn Rangers the Larne Academy of Sport.
Manager Matthew Crawford sat down with Ruben McClure to discuss the start of the season, as the side turn attentions to their first group stage tie against the Lisburn side. The side are feeling positive, with Crawford saying,
“It will be a really good challenge and test for the girls, which will give us a lot of things to look at and develop upon heading into the league season, which starts in May.”
Crawford is also looking ahead to the challenge posed by the Cliftonville game as a good opportunity to see how the team will perform against tough opponents, saying,
“Hopefully we can make a good start against Lisburn, and we can then build on that moving into the Derry City game.”
After the first group stage tie, Larne will then hit the road to face Derry City, currently playing at Mill Meadow, home of Moyola Park. Both the Candy stripes and Larne picked up a win in their last two meetings, it will be a tight game to end the group stage, with Matthew Crawford hoping to end the cup campaign on a high, with confidence and momentum to carry into the league the following week. With Matthew being asked about how the cup performances will continue into the league season, he said,
“Hopefully the team can build a winning mentality and try and take confidence from our performance’s week to week, and it will be important to embed that into the team early on in the season.”
Crawford also hopes this cup campaign will show the other competing teams how Larne will approach this season, saying,
“We want to be really competitive this season, and I think having a group with teams in our league helps that, following that, we’ve got to see how high up we can finish on the table, and try and take a positive step forward leading into the league campaign starting in May, and we want to go into that having a strong cup campaign in April”.
