We are pleased to announce the signing of highly rated junior international Cerys Sharkey on a permanent transfer from Glentoran Women.

The 17-year-old goalkeeper arrives at Inver Park as one of Northern Ireland’s most regarded prospects, having received international recognition at U17 and U19 level.

Sharkey made her first steps into football with Portrush FC and then Ballymoney United, where she made her senior debut in fifth division of the NIWFA’s league structure.

Following a successful spell in the sixth tier of the domestic game, the shot-stopper made the move to Coleraine and was part of the Bannsiders’ squad which secured promotion to the NIWFA Championship. After a season in the Championship, Sharkey made the switch to East Belfast and represented Glentoran in the Women’s Academy League last season.

At international level, Sharkey was named in the Northern Ireland U17 squad for March’s UEFA European Qualifiers where she was named in the squad which claimed a 2-0 victory over Turkey in Manavgat. Earning reward for her fine form, Sharkey was then selected for July’s U19 training camp in Belfast.

Head of Women’s Recruitment William Noble expressed his delight at bringing another junior international to Inver Park. He said:

“We have been aware of Cerys’ talent for some time now and as a player she has made some significant strides over the past two years, earning well deserved international recognition during the 2023 season.

“Once again, we are bringing one of Northern Ireland’s top young prospects to the club, but also another young player who has plenty of senior experience at just 17-years-old, which we believe is vital.

“Having both Kate and Cerys at our disposal represents real strength within our goalkeeping department and both players have so much scope and potential for improvement throughout the upcoming season which excites the coaching team.”

Upon signing for the Inver Reds, Sharkey commented:

“I’m delighted to have made the move to Inver Park and join up with the fantastic group of girls already at the club.

“Last season was a big year for my development, particularly at international level and I will draw on those experiences to ensure that I continue my development in 2024 and beyond.

“I have a decent amount of senior experience under my belt for my age, but I want to cement my name within the Women’s Premiership and believe the professionalism at Larne will provide me with the perfect opportunity to do this.”
