Captain’s Corner – Jeff Hughes

Nov 20, 2019 | Archive

AFTER collecting seven points from the last nine available, Jeff Hughes admits the squad can’t wait to take on league leaders Cliftonville at Inver Park on Saturday (3pm).

The captain admits he was delighted to collect three points away to Dungannon Swifts last weekend.

“I thought that it was a fantastic result from the boys on Saturday, given the circumstances,” he said.

“To go down to 10 men and come away with the victory is extremely satisfying and shows the fight that this team has.

“Credit has to go to Dungannon Swifts who played well and put us under pressure especially in the second half, but I thought that we defended brilliantly and deserved the win.

“I also have to give a special thank you to the supporters who made the journey to Stangmore Park, their support really helped to get us over the line.

“Saturday’s win keeps us in 6th place after 15 games and now means we are seven points clear of 7th. I think that it shows that we are progressing as a side and also how far we have come on our journey.”

Looking towards Saturday’s clash against Danske Banke Premiership leaders Cliftonville, the captain said: “It’s the sort of game that we look forward to.

“Cliftonville are the league leaders and are on top form in the league so we know that we must be at our best if we are to win the game.

“Cliftonville beat us earlier this season in a tight game that I thought we didn’t deserve to lose, so we will be out to put this right on Saturday.

“I would ask the fans to come out and be loud and vocal as they have been this season. This will really help give the boys a lift during the game.

“I hope to see you all on Saturday.”
