Brighter Futures supports the Maggie Black tournament

The Trustees of the Brighter Futures Community Fund were delighted to support the Maggie Black Tournament in 2023, in partnership with Kilwaughter Minerals.

The annual hurling and camogie tournament was played in August 2023 in memory of five-year-old Maggie Black who sadly passed away from a rare illness in 2021. Run as a joint initiative between St. John’s Camogie Club of Carnlough and Shane Ui Neills GAC of Glenarm, the organisers saw 160 players attend the competition – a 36% increase in comparison to 2022.

Taking place within the Carnlough/Glenarm community, the tournament is one which Brighter Futures has supported continually in the two years it has been played. This year’s funding was used to ensure that all 160 participants received a congratulatory medal following their games, a fitting end to a very worthwhile event.

Reflecting on the funding, Brighter Futures Trustee Roy Logan commented:

“On behalf of the Trustees of the Brighter Futures Community Fund and Kilwaughter Minerals, I would like to congratulate the tournament organisers on another excellent community event held in 2023.

“The Maggie Black Tournament is one which Brighter Futures has supported for two consecutive years now, and we believe that the spirit of the project aligns perfectly with the ethos of community spirit which our charity stands for.

“To have 160 young players coming into the Larne Borough to play a sport they love is a fitting tribute to Maggie Black, and I would like to thank Kilwaughter Minerals for their support which has allowed us to provide medals for all of the players.”
