Bonis off the mark in victory away to Warrenpoint

Lee Bonis scored his first goal for the club as Larne returned to winning ways with a 3-0 victory away to Warrenpoint.

Bonis struck just a minute after Davy McDaid had put Larne in front in the first half, with John Herron sealing the victory in the second half.

The game also saw Conor Devlin making his first start of the season after a ruptured achilles injury back in May.

The deadlock was broken on 33 minutes when Ronan Hale’s deep ball from the left was pulled back to John Herron. The Scottish midfielder fired goalwards, with Davy McDaid applying the finishing touch from close range.

With the hosts still reeling from the opener Larne pounced to double their lead a minute later. On break, John Herron did well to loft pass to Ben Doherty on the right flank.

He raced to byline before flashing a pass across the face of goal for Lee Bonis to apply the finishing touch with his chest. Young Town goalkeeper Stephen McMullan did his best to stop the effort, but referee Evan Boyce signalled the ball had crossed the line.

Larne as good as wrapped up the points 11 minutes into the second with a goal which will have been all too simple from Warrenpoint’s perspective.

Ben Doherty’s swung in a pinpoint free-kick from the left flank and an unmarked John Herron made no mistake by planting his header into the top corner. It was another impressive contribution from Doherty as the former Coleraine main took his tally to 12 assists for the season.

From this point on Larne wee in full control, although a plethora of substitutions affected the rhythm of the game.

The closest either side came to a goal was when John Herron headed just over from a Ronan Hale corner on the left.
